What is an E-Commerce Website?
An Ecommerce website is a website that includes functionality that allows goods (real or digital) to be sold over the internet.
Generally products within the shop are divided up into categories (such as laptops, pcs etc), so that customers can find them.
The website comes with an admin dashboard – where orders can be processed and invoices printed etc. Each product needs to be set up in the admin area of the e-commerce site – with photos, description, pricing, stock levels etc.
What are the options for an E-Commerce Website?
There are lots of different ecommerce websites available – with a wide range of costs – some are free to create and some charge a monthly fee.
With all the worries of online fraud and security, I always advise my customers to use a hosted website solution – where their ecommerce site is hosted on the shop providers servers – this means that they get 24/7 support and have the a Fully PCI Level 1 Compliant checkout. The webhosting uses fast servers and cutting edge infrastructure and most importantly is always kept up to date with the latest web security.
What if I don’t want a full ecommerce website?
There are also more options – you can have a full ecommerce website – where the customer adds the item to their basket, then checks out or you can have a much more simple solution where you link each product to a paypal button – this lets paypal deal with getting the shipping address and taking payment for the item.
How do you take payment?
There are lots of payment gateways available such as worldpay, sagepay and also Paypal and many shops allow credit card payments.
How do I add products to the website?
The admin area of the website is used to add new products to the shop – I provide full training on how to do this as part of my E-Commerce Website Design Service.
What software do you use for E-Commerce websites?
I have experience of working with a few different ecommerce software solutions – including: WooCommerce, Cubecart and Shopify.
I am a Shopify Partner and find that with Shopif you are able to quickly add and adjust products, process orders, keep track of stock and promote your items. Shopify has the basics beautifully covered and then some. Plus there are some very handy apps that we can add on if you extend its capabilities (like showing hand-picked related products).
