What is a CMS?


A CMS or content management system is something that can a website can have, that allows the owner to update the content of the website whenever they need to.


Do I need a CMS?


If you think that you are likely need to change the wording on the pages of your website, then you probably do. It also really depends on how often you think you will be changing the website. If it is once in a blue moon – then it may be more economical to go for a website without a CMS and get your website designer to change the content as and when you need to.

If there is a specific person within your business/organisation who is responsible for updating the site – then you will need a CMS.

Do you want to update your website with the latest company news? This is a vital reason to get a website with a content management system. That way you can keep the people reading your site aware of the changes that are happening within your business, or use the news pages as a way of reporting the successes within your business.

Are there different types of Content Management Systems?


Yes – there are partial content management systems. These allow you to text within specific areas on your webpages. For example, if you have a paragraph on your website which show testimonials from your customers, then if you need to update this text, you will be able to.


A much more comprehensive option is to have a full content management system. Depending on which type you have, you may be able to:
• Add new pages
• Add new images
• Add hyperlinks
• Add new menu items
• Write draft articles - then set them to published at a later date
• Add videos to your webpages
• Change the heading image
• Move the menu from one side of the page to the other


Some content management systems are more comprehensive than others, so it is really worth considering what you are likely to need to do in the future, before deciding on which sort to implement.
